how can i help?
i am seeking people interested in seeing some quality high school football in their region to attend some games and take some pictures and film if at all possible. i can make this easier for people by providing a list of prospects in the various parts of the country, maps to games, dates and times of games, and computer support. that is the purpose of this page.
how do i find these high schools?

it has maps to virtually every high school in the nation in it. a point to remember here is that the stadium isn't always at the same location as the high school. fortunately the website also provides a local phone number to contact the school. if you are just seeing games in your area, this should be a toll free call.
what equipment will i need?
first you would need a camcorder or a camera. second you would need a reasonably modern computer. most digital camcorders have a firewire output that will plug into your firewire in your computer. you may need those parts. if you are using an older analog camcorder, you will need a video capture card in your computer.
if you are just taking still photos, typically these cameras attach to a computer via a USB port. most all computers now have USB ports.
what equipment would you recommend?
the vanilla gorilla only uses sony products for his photography needs. i use a sony digital camcorder with 20x optical zoom and a sony digital still camera with a 3x optical zoom and a 2x zoom lens for a total of 6x optical zoom. you don't need a top of the line camera honestly to get some high quality footage. both my cameras are quite basic, but i get good shots almost always.
how should i film high school football?
light is critical. a well lit stadium (like fawcett stadium in canton or paul brown tiger stadium in massillon) will increase the amount of useable film you shoot. when at a well lit stadium i get about 75% of my stills to be high quality. when i am at a smaller stadium i am lucky to get 25% of my stills to be high quality. with that in mind, you may want to bring extra memory sticks or whatever you shoot your footage on. i typically take about 300 pictures each and every game along with an hour or two of film.
as for seats in the stadium. i prefer to sit on the sideline of the player i am trying to get shots on, near midfield if possible, and at least 15 or 20 feet above the field up in the stands. front row seats are nice until you got the rest of the sideline standing in front of you. i also highly recommend that you not sit on the aisle and not near the student section. most students at high school games aren't there to see football and they aren't wise enough to get out of my shot.
how can i get film into my computer?
i use ulead video studio 6.0. it is relatively cheap and extremely easy to use. i think it currently costs around $100. like any software, it is available for free via the file sharing services like kazaa, but that is illegal and definitely not recommended by the vanilla gorilla in any way shape or form. you never know what you are getting when you download software like that and you could get a computer virus.
once you have the software installed and the camera attached to the computer, it is quite simple. in ulead, you just hit the capture button, start the tape, hit the record button, and then hit the stop button when you are done capturing your video. don't worry much about getting a perfect capture. you can edit that on your computer.
one note here, you will need a bunch of free space on your hard drive to capture video. i would recommend having at least a few gigabytes free. once you compress that down to size you can delete the massive file though so don't worry about filling up the hard drive.
how do i edit my film?
editing the film is quite easy. in ulead, there are trim bars on the time line. you simply drag them back and forth until you get the perfect spot on your film that you want to start - end that clip. once you get good clips, you just drag them into order in the story board at the bottom of the screen. you can then add titles, voiceovers, transition scenes or whatever you want then to spruce up your film. just remember less is more when it comes to sprucing up the film and it will turn out good.
how do i compress my film?
compressing film in ulead is a snap. once you have your clips arranged and edited as you wish, simply click on finish and then there is a button to render the movie. it will ask you what format you want to render that film in. i recommend mpeg1 (which is the most popular on the internet). it is decent quality for a small screen clip. mpeg2 is the dvd coded for film and it is much higher quality. the file size will be larger, but the quality of the video will be much better too. i personally do all my work in dv format. that is much much higher quality than dvd and it is the format that you capture video in on your digital camcorder. once i get a good movie put together in dv format, i then output it back to my camcorder for a master copy and then i compress it to mpeg1 for the internet.
where can i store my film on the net for free?
right now the only place i know to store video files for free on the net is sony imagestation. you do need to sign up for an account to store film (or still pictures) there. anyone who wants to view your work will need to sign up as well. fortunately it is free of charge and hassle free. i highly recommend sony imagestation and would like to thank CLT for the tip on imagestation. also, if anyone out there knows of another video storage solution, let me know and i will be glad to list it here.

i am far from a recruiting expert. i am a recruiting fan at best. typically i only like to comment on players i have actually seen play football, but in an effort to provide a resource so other recruiting fans can see some of the top talent in the nation in their region and hopefully get some film and pictures to share with the rest of us, i created this page.
the vg has gathered this information from mainly his email inbox and from researching the web. i imagine some of this data will get stale and be useless after a certain period of time. i am including the date of the last update in the footer of each section so you know how stale some of this information actually is. just because a section has been updated recently does not mean that all the information is accurate either. before anyone goes to any high school game, i would suggest doing some research to be sure that the player you are going to see actually exists, is worth seeing, is eligible, isn't injured, and hasn't transferred to another school.
i have ordered all these lists by position. there is no order to the players on the list though. i don't evaluate players i haven't seen play football.
