Mike Massey
Position: defensive end - tight endHeight: 6'5"Weight: 240 pounds40 Time: 4.75 secondsHigh School: Cleveland St. IgnatiusNotes:Mike Massey was the top tight end I saw in state last season. I think his future though is at defensive end. Coming off the edge, Massey is equally adept at getting to the quarterback and staying home to defend the run.Mike will be one of the top 10 players in the state of Ohio and with the great coaching he gets at St. Ignatius he could move into the top 5 by season's end. He should be a top 100 player in the nation too. Excellent prospect. Massey picked up 9 sacks as a junior despite playing through some injuries and playing elite competition. Probably the most impressive thing I noticed about Massey was the way he played the run and recognized the plays. Against Massillon this season, Mike was rushing the edge really hard one play the only thing though was it was a little too easy. The offensive tackle was letting him go outside. Massey read this, spun back to the middle and just annihilated the ball carrier causing a fumble. It was the type of play that he shouldn't have been able to make, yet he did. I was sold right there. That exact play is available in the video archive free for all to enjoy. As a tight end, Massey showed good hands and deceptive speed. The 4.75 seconds in the fourty is just an estimate I made judging against other top players in the state. Mike was particularly effective at taking the little out cut and turning it up field. When he did have the ball in his hands, he was an absolute load to bring down. He could probably play tight end in college, but I think he starts out on defense. He is probably the best tight end prospect out of the storied St. Ignatius program since Dan O'Leary. Whether he plays tight end again this year or not is still up for debate. St. Ignatius has another great tight end in the making in the class below Massey that may allow Mike to concentrate on defense alone. As for what college Massey is looking at, that is anyone's guess. His brother Jim went to Ohio State, his other brother is going to Michigan, and his father went to Notre Dame. All three seem to be a player for Massey already. |
